Introduction
What is your role at IR+M?
I am a Senior Portfolio Manager, and a member of our Investment, Product Strategy, and Management Committees. I also lead the Portfolio Management Team, helping to develop some of our younger colleagues, maximize efficiency, and scale our business into new dimensions!
Describe your career path. How has it evolved at IR+M?
After graduating from college, I started off in an entry-level accounting position at a bank and immediately began studying for the CFA. After passing Level 1, I was able to finagle my way into a role working on the bank’s investment portfolio. I initially worked as an analyst for the bank’s treasurer before transitioning to a trading position. I eventually leveraged those experiences to apply for a job at IR+M, where I’ve now been a portfolio manager for over 20 years.
What do you enjoy most about working at IR+M?
I find the day-to-day interactions with my coworkers to be incredibly fulfilling. IR+Mers challenge each other to work hard and be the best versions of themselves, but they also lift each other up and emphasize the importance of building meaningful, long-term relationships.
How do you collaborate across teams at IR+M?
One of my favorite things about IR+M is our lack of silos. We shine in the “non-standard” aspects of our business due to our ability to mobilize across functional teams quickly and effectively. We work thoughtfully and deliberately as a cohesive unit, leveraging our individual skills. As a team, it’s gratifying to scale a mountain that we didn’t know we were going to climb that day!
What do you do in your free time?
As a family, we love to spend time outdoors in New Hampshire doing some sporting activity, like golfing, swimming, and boating. I have four boys and love coaching them, usually in baseball, but I am very excited to have joined the bench as a first-time hockey coach this past winter!
What inspires you?
I feel inspired by people who have the gumption and drive in life to better their situation through hard work, especially those without a predestined path to success. I am a big believer that there is always an opportunity for those who are willing to work for it.
What advice do you have?
Be a sponge. Never stop learning and absorbing information from the world around you. Also, time is a non-renewable resource, so don’t waste it. Being prepared allows you to optimize your efficiency, but also maximize your fun.
