John co-founded IR+M in 1987, a privately-owned, independent, fixed income investment management firm that serves institutional and private clients.

Serving as a Senior Portfolio Manager at IR+M for over 33 years, John and his co-founder and son, Jack Sommers, established our disciplined bottom-up investment approach. John has played a vital role in the evolution of our firm and the development of our seasoned team of investment professionals. John is an advisory member of our Management Committee and serves on our Board of Trustees.

Prior to co-founding IR+M, John was Director of Fixed Income, President, and CEO of Putnam Advisory Company where he was responsible for over $20 billion in fixed income assets. Before that, John was Director of Fixed Income Sales and Trading at Loeb, Rhoades & Co. and at F.S. Smithers.

John has a BA in Liberal Arts from Bucknell University and an MBA in Finance from NYU.
